This small Terracotta Sculpture depicts a woman with babe in arms leading her blind husband. It is finished with a blue/green semi-matt glaze. This is such a moving and powerful piece which can only have been created during or shortly after the First World War. This is endorsed by the glaze which is reminiscent of the WW1 uniforms. At first, we thought this may have been a moulded piece but on close examination the Artist's signature (indistinct due to the glaze- see close up image) has been hand incised into the wet terracotta which indicates a hand worked piece. Sadly, we have not been able to identify the artist, although it is thought to originate from France.
We believe this is an impressive observation of the impact of war on ordinary people and a real discussion piece.
