Antique African or Polynesian Hard Wood Form with original Collection Label

The origins of this unusual and very tactile piece remains a complete mystery. It is made of a tropical hardwood, possibly a mahogany and dates from the 1800s but possibly older. It is mounted on a black lacquered hardwood plinth secured with what appear to be hand cut screws which in themselves have great patina. In addition it retains an original 'collection label' on which is written 'pattern No 125'. Our thoughts are, given its age, patnia, style and materials it possibly originates from Africa or one of the Polynesian Islands. There are some surface marks to the sculpture and wear to the lacquered plinth commensurate with it's age (see close up images). This is a real 'discussion' piece in so many ways.
