This is truly an impressive sculpture of a Sea Otter which has been hand carved out of a single Yew Tree trunk. It is signed 'PC' however we have not been able to identify the artist.
The piece has been carved in an Art Deco style with the beautiful sleek lines of the otter offset with the rugged structure of the plinth.
We acquired the piece from a family who were decendants of the founder of the internationally renowned Paignton Zoo in South Devon, England. The Sea Otter had been owned by them for a number of decades and although the details have been lost, they believe it had once been located in the zoo.
We have commissioned a professional and sympathetic restoration which has brought the piece back to life with vibrant and rich colours of the Yew, yet still retaining the rustic elements such as the texture of the trunk including the drying cracks and surface wood worm holes to the lower section. The cracks have been stablilised and the worm holes have been fully treated.
This is a real statement piece which would grace any interior.
